Farm Bureau announces book award
Mini Milk Maids on the Mooove has been selected as the winner of the 2010 Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Children’s Literature Award. Given annually by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation board of trustees, the award recognizes the author of a children’s book the organization considers to be an especially important contribution to American literature. Written by five-year-old twin sisters Rianna and Sheridan Chaney and edited by their mother Rebecca Long Chaney, the book highlights the twins’ personal experiences in the dairy industry including time with their grandfather, a retired dairy farmer; learning about what happens at a dairy farm from birth to milk production; participating at the county fair; joining the local 4-H club; and helping to make ice cream at South Mountain Creamery. Geared toward preschool and elementary-aged children, the book includes a glossary, recipes for butter in a jar and ice cream in a bag, fun dairy facts and links to educational and fun dairy Web sites. The book is available for purchase from county Farm Bureaus. Other books nominated for this year’s award include: Farmers and Ranchers Care about their Animals! This is the third book in a series about Kailey’s Ag Adventures that educates young children about the importance of agriculture in our lives. Written by the executive director of Kansas Farm Bureau, this book combines real photographs of livestock with illustrations. Web site includes lessons to supplement the story. Written by Dan Yunk with illustrations by Michele Johnson and Marsha Jensen. Kansas Farm Bureau, 2009.
Our Generous Garden This story is based on a real-life elementary school garden where the author volunteered. Readers learn how to grow their own food, responsibility, helping others and healthy eating habits. Written by Anne Nagro and illustrated by Theresa Mezebish. Dancing Rhinoceros Press, 2009.
