A Cut Above TECHNOLOGY AND THE DESIGNED WORLD
Student activity based on the article "A Cut Above" from the November/December 2009 Our Ohio magazine.
Academic Content Standard (Technology - Grade 9) Standard 7: Designed World: Students understand how the physical, informational and bio-related technological systems of the designed world are brought about by the design process. Critical to this will be the students’ understanding of their role in the designed world: its processes, products, standards, services, history, future, impact, issues and career connections. Benchmark G: Classify, demonstrate, examine and appraise agricultural and related biotechnologies.

Discussion points • Read the entire article titled "A Cut Above." • Is the production of fiber or the harvest of trees considered part of the agricultural industry? Explain why. • Historically, logging has had a negative image in terms of environmental impact. Explain. • What are the major environmental issues that the logging industry faces with regard to harvesting wood from the land? • Explain how the logging industry can be defined as “green” according to this article? • What procedures are followed by the logger in the article to ensure positive environmental stewardship? • Discuss the various technologies used by loggers to protect the soil and minimize environmental impact. o Equipment o Site maintenance o Other uses for the land after logging • What is the process of logging?
