October 2008 eNewsletter | | | | | | Welcome to OurOhio.org A Giant MissionBob Liggett was raised along the Ohio River in the Brown County town of Ripley. His father and grandfather managed the Ripley Hardware Co. for more than 60 years and Liggett grew up to be an optometrist. Nowhere along the way was farming a part of his life until he and his wife Jo moved to their current property outside Circleville 15 years ago and met a local farmer, Brent Rhoads. Rhoads was working soil on his property that backs to the Liggetts’. Liggett admited his nosiness was what prompted him to talk to Rhoads to find out what he was up to. “By the way, I’m planting a plant that grows giant pumpkins,” Rhoads told him. “But I don’t have the time to care for them, would you?” Click here to follow the progress of Liggett's giant pumpkin, Creampuff, which weighed in at 1,524.5 pounds at last year's Circleville Pumpkin Show. Bob and Jo Liggett won this year's Pumpkin Show, too. Their pumpkin, Megan, tipped the scales at 1375.5 pounds. The pumpkin is on display for the duration of the show. Remember the saying “Have breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper”?
Funny thing is, there’s a lot of wisdom in those words. Recently, nutrition experts and leading minds in the medical field are discovering more about why that is. Starting off your day by breaking the fast your body has endured since dinner the previous night is a fundamentally good idea. Day after day, it’s like building a foundation on which to place the rest of your “structure.”
Most adults will readily acknowledge that eating breakfast is a healthy habit. Yet surprisingly, some 20 percent of all adults don’t eat at all in the morning. Click here to find out why that is.
