Growing a Masterpiece “Growing a Masterpiece” was an art exhibit on display at the Nationwide Ag & Hort Building at the Ohio State Fair, sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau. This year's theme is "A Tip of the Hat to Agriculture" as county Farm Bureaus have transformed blank straw cowboy hats into artistic representations of agriculture in their area. Artists used fabric, paper, paint and many other materials to decorate their hat. The only requirement was that the Our Ohio logo or words Our Ohio be featured somewhere on the hat.
Voting for the Best of Show began July 30 at the State Fair, as well as online. Online voting will end Nov. 21. The Best of Show work of art will be revealed at the 2008 Ohio Farm Bureau annual meeting.

Chances are you’re familiar with Nationwide and its “Life Comes at You Fast” advertising campaign. More than likely, you also are familiar with its slogan: “Nationwide is on your side.” But you may not know why Ohio Farm Bureau gives so much attention to Nationwide and its products.
The connection between Ohio Farm Bureau and Nationwide goes back more than 80 years. In 1926, Ohio Farm Bureau created its own insurance company and that company is now known as Nationwide. Ohio Farm Bureau members benefit from this affinity relationship by being part of a large group that leverages policies that ultimately produce lower rates. Savings can be significant on several types of insurance, including homeowners and auto, but members need to maintain their paid membership status to retain lower Farm Bureau rates.

Three Pepper Salad 1 red sweet pepper, cored and seeded 1 yellow sweet pepper, cored and seeded 1 orange sweet pepper, cored and seeded 1 small sweet onion ¼ cup chopped parsley coarse salt and ground pepper 1 tablespoon rice vinegar 1 tablespoon sesame oil ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese
Slice sweet peppers into matchstick-size pieces and place in a large bowl. Slice onion into matchstick-size pieces and add to the bowl. Add parsley. Sprinkle with coarse salt and pepper. Add rice vinegar and sesame oil, stirring to mix well. Cover and refrigerate approximately 1 hour before serving. To serve, toss salad again and sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese.

Eating fish has plenty of health benefits, and dietitians still recommend Americans eat more fish than we currently do. But with so many advisories about toxins in fish, it's easy to become concerned.
Here in the Buckeye State, the Ohio Department of Health recommends eating no more than one meal a week from sport fish caught in the state. A few years back, the advisory was directed only at women of child-bearing age and children age 6 and younger. In 2003, it was extended to everyone, mostly to simplify the message and to act as a conservative measure to protect public health.
Some sport fish should be eaten even less than once a week, and some not at all. It all depends where you are fishing and what kind of fish you are catching. To read more about fish health benefits and concerns click here. | | Avoiding SunburnWe all know that overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, and that using sufficiently powerful sunscreen prevents this. But a study published in 2001 by the American Academy of Dermatology revealed that 73 percent of swimmers at a popular beach in Texas used sunscreen, but got burnt anyway. Why? These folks forgot to re-apply their sunscreen after the water had rinsed it off! Other studies have shown that sunscreen users who do not apply enough sunscreen to protect all their exposed skin miss out on the benefits of protection.
