freshwater farmsFreshwater Farms, located near Urbana in Champaign County, is Ohio's largest indoor fish hatchery and producer of wholesome rainbow trout fillets and smoked trout. The fish are raised from egg to adult in solar-heated barns using clean water and feed. Freshwater Farms’ specialties are hand-cut boneless fillets as well as smoked trout products, seasoned trout patties, marinated and pre-seasoned fillets, and bulk seasonings made from scratch. The products are made with all natural ingredients and contain no artificial preservatives. Freshwater Farms offers a retail store, open year-round Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed major holidays). Other local products including honey, maple syrup, stone-ground flours and pancake mixes are featured. The fish farm is open for public, self-guided tours as well as large group tours. (A fee is charged for large groups.) Family activities such as trout feeding, displays of native fishes and a sturgeon petting zoo are available. The Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival is held at the farm the third Saturday and Sunday in September.
