pet insurance can be a practical stocking stufferNote: This article was printed in the November/December 2006 Our Ohio magazine. The holidays are among the most popular times to bring a new puppy or kitten into a household, often as a gift to youngsters. Naming the new family member may be your first concern, but planning how to care for it is equally important. Everyone knows that puppies and kittens are prone to getting into mischief, and holiday time presents even more opportunities than usual. There are decorations to play with and edibles to sample that can cause serious problems for domestic animals. You’ll want to establish ties with a nearby vet and set a plan for any after-hours emergencies. You may also consider pet health insurance to help you through those difficult situations. “Finances are the last thing you want to worry about when trying to help your pet in distress,” said veterinarian Dr. Carol McConnell, who serves as director of veterinary education and services for Veterinary Pet Insurance, or VPI. “Having a health insurance policy for your pet is an affordable way to help you and your veterinarian make the best choices for your pet’s care without cost being the deciding factor,” said McConnell. She said policy rates are lower for younger animals and getting a policy early helps ensure your pet is covered if an accident or illness occurs. The cost for pet insurance plans through VPI begins at about $9 per month for six-week-old kittens and about $12 per month for puppies. Policies that include routine care, vaccinations, spaying and neutering cost about $17 per month for kittens and $20 per month for dogs through VPI. Ohio Farm Bureau members can receive a 5 percent discounted premium from VPI by calling 800-USA- PETS (800-872-7387) or visiting ourohio.org, then clicking on Member Benefits for access to the VPI link.
