gossamer-winged beauties return to butterfly houseTranquility is a scarce commodity these days. The stresses of the workplace, worries about family and other anxious thoughts just seem to pursue us wherever we go. But spend a few moments relaxing in The Butterfly House and your worldly cares will soon melt away. Located at 11455 Obee Road in Whitehouse, The Butterfly House blends a lush, serene tropical garden with a dazzling array of visually stunning butterflies, fluttering among the foliage and alighting to sip nectar from fragrant blossoms. One cannot help but become entranced by these delicate, gossamer-winged gems as they “dance” hypnotically through the air. A trickling waterfall completes the scene and delights the ears with its gentle music. More than 100 butterfly species, from North America, Central America, Malaysia and the Philippines, grace this unique facility throughout the season, which opens May 1, 2010, and more than 500 butterfly specimens can be observed on any given day. Butterflies are fragile and ephemeral beings, each specimen sharing its beauty with the world for only three to four weeks, so hundreds of new butterflies are brought into the Butterfly House each week. Because the living display is constantly evolving, repeat visits to the Butterfly House are a must for true butterfly aficionados. A major component of the Butterfly House’s mission is to educate the public about the butterflies that share our world. Visitors can stop by the Education Center to discover more about North American butterfly species. Gardeners can learn how to plant a butterfly-friendly garden. The Butterfly House gift shop, which features a wonderful array of butterfly-related items, also offers educational books, videos, and other materials for teachers looking for ways to supplement their lesson plans or for anyone wanting to learn more about butterflies. Also, The Butterfly House Web site, www.butterfly-house.com, features an “Ask the Expert” section—where people from all over the world go to have their butterfly-related questions answered—as well as other educational links and materials. The Butterfly House is a popular destination for school groups, scout troops, senior citizens, and anyone looking for a calm, soothing respite from the hustle and bustle of modern living.
