yogurtNutrition Lowfat and nonfat yogurt are a nutritious source of calcium and protein, as well as riboflavin, phosphorus and vitamin B12. Studies show the live yogurt cultures can help restore good bacteria in the intestines, especially after the use of antibiotics that can alter the bacteria in the digestive system.
Check the date on yogurt and select the latest date available. To determine the amount of sugar in a particular yogurt, check the carbohydrate content. Also be aware of whether the yogurt uses preserves or fresh fruit. Keep unopened yogurt containers in the refrigerator where they will last for approximately 10 days past the freshness date. But always look at and smell the yogurt to ensure freshness before eating. Yogurt can be eaten straight from the carton and it is also a healthy substitute for sour cream or mayonnaise in recipes. For use in recipes, drain any excess liquid from the top of the yogurt before using. |
